Small tanks are unforgiving. A 10-gallon planted tank cycles nitrogen slower than a 20, so the filter does more of the heavy lifting. Choose one that moves water without blasting plants; choose sponge-only if your livestock includes shrimp or fry.
The AquaClear 50 is oversized for a 10 — this is on purpose. With the flow knob turned down, you get the media volume benefits without the flow stripping plants. The sponge filter alternative is quieter, safer for shrimp, and requires almost no maintenance beyond a monthly rinse.
