A standard 29-gallon aquarium is taller than a 20 long while using a similar common footprint. That extra height changes where the return reaches, and dense hardscape can shelter the lower opposite corner. The filter rating matters, but outlet placement and the finished layout decide whether water reaches the whole tank.
Do not choose from one turnover rule. Manufacturer figures use different test conditions, and a pump maximum is not the same measurement as circulation through a loaded filter.
Fluval lists the AC50 Power Filter for 20 to 50 gallon aquariums, with a maximum flow rate of 200 GPH. A 29-gallon tank sits comfortably inside that published volume band.
The HOB format keeps the media basket accessible from above the aquarium. That is useful when you want to inspect foam, rinse mechanical media, or change one media layer without disconnecting hoses below the tank. The return position is fixed at the back rim, so tank placement and the direction of the falling water matter.
Choose the AC50 when simple access is more valuable than hiding the filter body. Keep the water level high enough for the intended return behavior and use the model’s control rather than blocking the outlet with improvised material.
The same 07 Series manual lists the Fluval 207 for 20 to 45 gallon aquariums, with 121 GPH filter circulation, 206 GPH pump performance, and 1.8 liters of basket volume. A 29-gallon tank sits near the middle of that published range rather than at its ceiling.
Choose the 207 when separate intake and return placement and canister media trays matter, and when you want documented volume headroom beyond 29 gallons. It still adds hoses, valves, seals, and a water-filled canister to the service path. Published headroom does not replace checking the installed current and water quality.
Fluval lists the 107 Canister Filter for 10 to 30 gallon aquariums. Its 07 Series manual distinguishes 145 GPH pump performance from 95 GPH filter circulation and lists 1.2 liters of basket volume.
At 29 gallons, the aquarium is near the top of the published range. That does not make the 107 wrong, but it offers little documented volume headroom. Pick it for its smaller canister body and separate intake and output positions, not because a canister label automatically means more useful flow.
The tradeoff is the service path. Hoses, valves, seals, an impeller, and a water-filled canister all need inspection according to the manual. Make sure the stand has room to remove the unit without tipping it.
Typical planted community: start with the AC50. It stays inside its manufacturer range, gives direct media access, and is easier to inspect when the aquarium is still being adjusted.
Display tank with a cabinet: the Fluval 207 is the stronger documented canister fit when headroom matters. The 107 can make sense when its smaller body matters and the upper range boundary is acceptable.
Shrimp or fry: cover the complete intake with securely fitted foam. Inspect the cover after every service and clean it when falling flow shows that it has become the first restriction.
Heavy feeding or unusual livestock: do not solve the question by jumping to the next model name. Check the species needs, waste load, installed circulation, ammonia and nitrite, and the manufacturer’s advice for that setup.
Aim the return so surface water moves without leaving the lower aquarium isolated. Plant movement should be visible but not force every leaf in one direction. Fish should be able to feed and hold position without constantly working against the current.
After installation, inspect for:
Move the outlet, intake, or hardscape before assuming that more maximum GPH is the only answer.
Follow the manual for the exact filter. Service mechanical media when debris reduces output or bypasses the intended path. Preserve biological media rather than replacing every layer together.
For the AC50, check the intake, impeller area, basket, and priming after service. For either canister, add hoses, valves, seals, trays, and the canister head to the inspection. None of the three earns a universal monthly or quarterly schedule from its format alone.
Buy the AquaClear 50 for the typical 29-gallon planted community aquarium when easy access and adjustable HOB operation fit the room.
Buy the Fluval 207 when separate intake and output placement and a 20 to 45 gallon published range justify canister service. Choose the Fluval 107 only when its smaller body is useful and the 29-gallon position near its published maximum is acceptable.
For a smaller tank, use the 20 gallon filter guide. If the final choice is the 107 or AC50, compare their placement and service paths directly. The filter category guide covers the broader format decision.
